Why it matters
In Uganda, about a third of young women were married before the age of 18, and about one in four girls aged 15 to 19 had already begun childbearing (Uganda Demographic and Health Survey 2016). In rural communities like ours, girls are the first to leave school when money is short or when they are needed at home. This project keeps girls learning. It provides sanitary pads so no girl misses school each month, a girls' club with mentoring and life-skills sessions on growing up, relationships and staying safe, fees for girls at risk of dropping out, talks with parents about the value of keeping daughters in school, and follow-up the same week a girl stops coming. Every shilling is reported here, and girls' identities are protected.
